An elite Ultra trail runner in the Pacific Northwest must use his special skill set to run drugs across the Canadian border or risk losing everything that matters to him
As an Ultra trail runner, Mike Stevens is one of the elite few that can easily navigate 50 miles over some of the most treacherous terrain God ever cut out of the Pacific Northwest. He lives to run; at least he did. That seems like a long time ago now. Before his parents died. Before his failing business saddled him with debt. Before he had to work for Thomas Lewis to make ends meet so he could take care of his younger brother, Tyler. Running is mostly an afterthought now. Working for Thomas takes up most of his time.
Thomas operates a large drug trafficking syndicate along the Canadian border. A recent series of organizational failures has closed several of his delivery routes and Thomas is getting pressured by his associates to find a quick solution to meet demand. It doesn't help that Henry Cassin, a veteran investigator for the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and local legend, is also following leads pointing to Thomas' door. Thomas leans on Mike for ideas and Mike suggests that he, himself, run backpacks of smaller, more profitable, drugs across the porous Canadian border. It solves their immediate product problem and will keep the Feds off them - for now. Thomas agrees.
Mike quickly settles into his new role and the running is easy, enjoyable even. Thomas seems to relax and the operation is going according to plan. Mike even finds the time to ignite an old crush, Emily Blaylock, a part-time teacher, part-time bartender, and full-time singer-songwriter. Their relationship takes off, but Mike keeps the details of his work secret from Emily.
Meanwhile, Henry has been saddled with a new partner in his investigation. Gabriel Sandoval is young, brash, and impatient - everything Henry is not and Henry resents him for it. The feeling is mutual. Regardless, they find a way to work together and increase the security patrol along the border. Sandoval becomes suspicious of Mike and, in the process, uncovers a past relationship between Henry and Mike.
As things begin to unravel, Mike is eventually faced with his the consequences of his actions and it strains his relationship with Emily. He tries to walk away from it all, but Thomas isn't done with him yet. He has become too valuable. To make matters worse, Henry and Sandoval have an informant and it's only a matter of time before they can prove his involvement. Mike has to make a play to soon to get out of this, but how? He finds that he has only one chance to make things right and to survive. But, in order to do so, he will have to put everything, and everyone, on the line. He must Run.For.His.Life.
